India is home to 26% of the global extreme poor and 50 % of India’s under 18 population lives in abject poverty. According to ICRW (International Centre for Research on Women) report three major reasons of domestic violence are poverty, unemployment and alcoholism. According to TOI, the national lockdown due to covid 19 has resulted in 50% rise in domestic violence cases. While these intimidating statistics loom large, India has several organisations that are working to change the situation by skilling girls and women to become self-dependent and earn a livelihood. Such initiatives not only make girls and women self-dependent but also reduce dowry and domestic violence cases as economic independence make women empowered. After success of candle making enterprise by Ruby and Nisha, Ek Pahel presents another inspiring story of change of Babina and Pooja Kumari of Ek Pahel Pathshala who received pure, organic soap making training from Soap Studio, Agra by Nivedita Agrawal and Niyati Goyal. Babina is a 15 year old girl who studies in class IX at Ek Pahel Pathshala. She lost her father few years back leaving her mother with three daughters and two sons. Her mother and one elder brother work to support her family. But what they earn is just enough to have meals. Babina studying in Ek Pahel Pathshala dreams to come out of the clutches of poverty and be an entrepreneur. She is not only good in academics but also very creative. She has learnt the art of soap making under Ek Pahel’s SWABHIMAN project and wants to start soap making enterprise.
